Decided to watch DIrty Grandpa (unrated) (2016) and man was it was good. I didn't expect much but I was overwhelmed with laughter. Maybe it was Robert DeNiro cussing a blue streak. Maybe it was Aubrey Plaza's slut character stealing the film... you know what? It was both.
There is a lot that is predictable about this film. Like 9 minutes in when Zac's fiancee, played by Julianne Hough, says she needs Zac to send her the pictures for their rehearsal brunch... you just know she is going to get some spring break photos... but maybe not in the way you think. I won't spoil it, but it's a fun twist.
But if you forget some the absurdness of it, like the local Daytona area police being so cool about Jason Mantzoukas, who plays Pam a local drug dealer, breaking all the laws.... then it's a funny film. Jason always plays the same character (he's also in The League as Rafi, spots in Brooklyn 99 and even the new release "The House" with Will Ferrell and Amy Pohler) but he plays the whacked out sketchy loon well and he fits in this movie like Zac Efron fits in to a fuzzy hornet g-string... you'll get that if you watch the movie... and please do... Lots of dirty language... and coming from DeNiro more than anyone. If you hate over-the-top language and sex being the source of jokes you don't want to see this.
But since you aint that stuffy aforementioned douche you'll enjoy Aubrey Plaza throwing herself at DeNiro with lines that will make you blush, and even Bobby D. hitting hard in the beginning on the tiny pink car that his grandson brings to drive them to Florida by referring to it as a giant labia and later when liquid is threatened to be spilled in it says no worries because the giant tampon they are in will soak it up.
I wasn't completely in love with the Zac Efron falling for Zoey Deutch's character but I guess it added something to the storyline.
Also if you ever wanted to see dicks drawn on the faces of Zac Efron, and Dermot Mulroney, who plays Zac's Dad, then this is the film for you.
If you want a raunchy comedy that is on Hulu. Look no further than Dirty Grandpa. It will be funnier than you think. On a scale of 5 stars I give it a 4. It's not Oscar-worthy but it did what it was supposed to do.
